2004 Judo Olympian Dr. Rhadi Ferguson and Navy SEALs Deliver Mental Toughness Training To College Athletes
Boca Raton, FL and Coronado, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2011 As part of the Navy’s effort to attract top minority talent, all 13 members of the CIAA—the nation’s oldest black athletic conference, established in 1912—have agreed to participate in the “Mental Toughness, Never Quit” campaign.
The training will occur during on-campus “Mental Toughness” seminars this month and in March at each school, as well as follow-up “Mental Toughness” conditioning and team-building events at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Virginia Beach, Va. The base events will take place during spring football camp, a time in which the teams assess their talent and provide conditioning for the upcoming fall season.
The SEALs will provide players with a unique look into how mental preparedness is essential to winning.
One of the key facilitators of the program is 2004 Olympian and undefeated Strikeforce Mixed Martial Arts Fighter, and World Class Strength and Conditioning Coach, Rhadi Ferguson.
Dr. Ferguson has a compelling story and intriguing background which brings and interesting element to the Mental Toughness training seminar series. As a graduate from a Historically Black College (Howard University) and an exemplar in academia and sport, Dr. Rhadi Ferguson exemplifies what mental toughness is all about.
One of Dr. Ferguson’s Olympic Teammates is CIAA track and field coach and living legend, George Williams. When asked about the program Mr. Williams said, “I am excited that the Navy SEALs and the athletic directors of the CIAA have joined this mutually beneficial effort to share mental-toughness skills with the members of the CIAA,” George Williams, athletic director at St. Augustine’s College, a CIAA school, said. “From my 38 years of experience in the CIAA, and as the 2004 Head U.S. Olympic Track Coach, mental toughness is always key in developing success in athletics and life.”
And Dr. Ferguson couldn’t agree more. “As an Olympian, I recognize the need to push through tangible and intangible obstacles which life presents and which seem impossible to overcome. It is my desire and goal to provide a harmonious perspective to the student athletes as a graduate from a HBCU which will allow the message of Mental Toughness which the Navy Seals and I are delivering to have an even greater effect on the lives of the student athletes in the CIAA.”
The goal of the program—which includes goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk and emotional regulation skills—is to provide valuable training to athletes while exposing them to potential career opportunities within the SEAL Teams.
“We need a strong force of mentally tough, culturally-diverse SEALs,” Cmdr. Brodes Hartley of the Navy SEALs said. “We need the broad spectrum of thought and perspective, and the cultural insights that come from that diversity, to keep us on the cutting edge as warriors.”
CIAA/Navy SEALs seminar schedule

Mississauga Kombat Muay Thai Athletes Excel at the Nationals
(PRWEB) January 29, 2009 Athletes from Kombat Arts Training Academy (http://www.kombatarts.com) took a number of awards at the 2009 Canadian National Championships held by the Council of Amateur Sport Kickboxing (CASK) this past weekend (January 24th and 25th, 2009). The Championships were held in Burlington, Ontario at the Burlington Senior Center and featured many different areas of competition. Members of Kombat Arts received unanimous votes from the panel of judges for championship and gold awards in several categories.
In a unanimous decision, Kevin Nabbie took the Gold Medal in the championships. Mr. Nabbie also received the Thai Boxing Junior Athlete of the Year award.
Sylwester Organka, recently returning after a year and a half out of the ring, received the National Low Kick Championship belt, also awarded unanimously. Mr. Organka fought on the first day, then spent the second day as a coach, providing much needed support for the competition.
Julian della Vedova received a Thai Boxing National Championship belt, impressing the entire team of judges with his skill.
Max Grech also received a Thai Boxing National Championship belt, scoring a TKO in the third round with impressive kicks.
A Gold Medal was awarded to Joel Holland, a student of Eddie De Nobrega and representing the Kombat Arts for this tournament. Mr. De Nobrega is recognized as an expert of Muay Thai, and has been practicing the art for more than fourteen years. At one time, he lived in Thailand, fighting in the professional circuit, as well as for the World Muay Thai Council. Mr. Holland received his Gold Medal as the result of a third round TKO, awarded due to a right hand blow to the body.
By unanimous decision from the judges, Kareem Hackett also received a Gold Medal against a very difficult unorthodox opponent.
Not all of the entrants from Kombat Arts received awards or won their matches. Nenad Cvejic was paired against a much more seasoned fighter and lost his match. However, this opponent speaks well of Mr. Cvejic and was surprised to be fighting against an opponent who was entering his first low kick match. Headley Hinds also lost his match, due to majority decision on the part of the judges. Paolo Dultra participated only in a demo match as his opponent failed to show due to an injury from the previous day, and Kyran Cameron was matched against a fighter of different weight, so the bout was cancelled.
Kombat Arts was awarded second place for Most Supportive Club in the event, with many coaches supporting their athletes and helping with warm ups, gear, and corner work. These included Roberto Herrera, David Edwards, Sylwester Organka, Marc Mendoza, and “Master” Lee, all of them led by Head Coach, Joey de Los Reyes.
Kombat Arts Training Academy is Canada’s premier Mixed Martial Arts Facility, located in Mississauga, twenty minutes west of Toronto. Programs offered by the academy include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Jeet Kune Do, and Combat Submission Wrestling. They aim to provide instruction to meet a variety of goals, and have been operating since before 2000, training some of the top athletes in these sports.
The Kombat Arts Training Academy is located in a new, extremely modern, fifteen thousand square foot facility featuring high quality, up to date equipment for all martial arts taught there. Kombat Arts moved to this facility from a smaller one, due to increased demand for the services offered by the academy. Kombat Arts has also now opened a second location in Milton, Ontario.
More information about the Kombat Arts Training Academy, the Canadian National Championships, and the martial arts training offered can be found on the academy’s web page at http://www.kombatarts.com. In addition, Joey de Los Reyes, owner and acting Program Director of the facility, can be reached at 905-804-8158 or info (at) kombatarts.com

Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Fight For Children
|
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) May 14, 2009 Bellator Fighting Championships’ competitors Dave Menne and Kevin Knabjian took time away from their busy training schedules for Friday’s fights at Bellator VII in Chicago for a different kind of fight; the fight for children’s health. Someone that understands fighting for his health, former UFC champion Dave Menne was previously diagnosed with deadly Lyme disease that could have taken his life and seriously derailed his MMA career. Menne and Knabjian spent time this week signing autographs, handing out presents and spreading excitement and cheer with some of the young MMA fans at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Bellator Fighting Championships has committed ten percent of proceeds from the May 15, 2009 Bellator VII ticket sales at the Aragon Entertainment Center to research initiatives at the hospital.
“As a resident and business owner in Chicago, few things are as important as helping children in our community and generating awareness for the magical work the people at Children’s Memorial Hospital do every day of the year,” said Bellator Fighting Championships CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Every week these Bellator warriors compete for pride and championships and this week part of that battle will be for the children who fight every day against illness and disease.”
The largest Chicago-based MMA organization, Bellator Fighting Championships’ premiere season consists of 12 two-hour events broadcast weekly in primetime on Saturday nights on ESPN Deportes.
