Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art based in ground fighting. It is similar to other grappling arts, but with a different positional approach, including, but not limited to, fighting from your back. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournaments is a great place to view what the art is capable of.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered by many martial artists to be an important element in having a complete self-defense arsenal. In fact, nearly all MMA fighters train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu because of its proven effectiveness in combat.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Characteristics

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an art based in ground fighting. Along with this, it teaches takedowns, takedown defense, ground control, and especially submissions. Submissions refer to holds that either cut off an opponent’s air supply (chokes) or look to take advantage of a joint (such as arm bars). Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters tend to feel very comfortable fighting from a position called the guard, if need be. The guard position– in essence, wrapping one’s legs around an opponent to limit their movement– is what allows them to fight from their backs so effectively, and is also something that separates their art from most other grappling styles.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Methodology

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters look to take their opponents to the ground. When on top they generally hope to escape their opponents’ guard and move to either side control (positioned across an opponents’ chest) or the mount position (sitting over their ribs or chest). From there, depending on the situation, they may choose to continually strike their opponent or set up a submission hold. When on their backs, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters are very dangerous. From the guard, various submission holds can be used. They may also seek to turn their opponent over using sweeps in an attempt to gain the mount (top position).Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournaments Continue to evolve various aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be classified alongside the sports of Judo and Taekwondo, being a martial art and combat sport. As well as being used for the art of self defense, it is great in character building in the young person, giving them a focus and aim in life.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is said to have come about due to a large immigrant population of Japanese in Brazil, its’ invention being a relatively new one, in the twentieth century. It is derived form the Japanese martial art of Judo, and although is very similar in many aspects, ranking being gained by dans and belts, it sets itself aside from Judo by being a sport that is more focused on ground fighting.

The main focus of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the capability to grapple your opponent to the ground, locking them into a position from which they are unable to move, regardless of the weight of the opponents.

The Jiu Jitsu Gi is the formal uniform used when training and fighting Jiu Jitsu.

Again, it is very similar to that of Judo, but the legs and arms are slightly less loose. Traditionally the Jiu Jitsu Gi must be warn for all training sessions, and although no Gi is allowed by some, when fighting in tournaments, it is compulsory.

Ranking in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, again follows a similar pattern to those of both Judo and Taekwondo, the black belt being the highest and much respected ranking. Depending on commitment levels, it can take up to or more than ten years to obtain the black belt. Bjj Belts are categorized into junior and senior, seniors starting at the age of 16.

Like its’ counterparts, Judo and Taekwondo, it is encouraged from a very early age, being both a healthy practice, as well as a method of learning both self defense and self discipline. From its’ development in the early twentieth century, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has become a very popular and well practiced sport, holding many competitions worldwide, as well as at local levels.

The main techniques for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, that stand it apart from its’ ancestor Judo, are the techniques of joint locks, choke holds, and submission holds. These techniques show the individual that they do not need to be scared of an enemy or opponent who is bigger, or stronger than themselves, in one clean move, they can have their opponent immobilized on the ground.

It is important that all youngsters learn self defense in todays society, but also it is of explicit importance that their knowledge is not abused. In learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the individual also builds character and self control, making them a well rounded person, able to use their knowledge in the correct situations. It is often argued if the Brazilian art of Jiu Jitsu came from the Japanese art of judo, or that of Japanese Jiu Jitsu, but from either or both of the above, has developed a worldwide recognized martial art and combat sport.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began with a Japanese man by the name of Mitsuyo Maeda. He was a skilled Judoka and one of the members of the Kodokan. Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu is a good martial art if you are a small and/ or week person in need of a fighting and defense technique that will give you an advantage over your assailant. The leverage and techniques applied in this martial art make it perfect for weak people to take over larger and/ or stronger people.

There are numerous forms of Jiu-Jitsu. In this Brazilian form of Jiu-Jitsu you will often see two opponents on the ground, bodies interlocked, trying to pin each other down. In tournament fighting the game is won by the person who gets his opponent in to a hold he can’t get out of, this is known as a submission hold. When fighting on the ground with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, height and size doesn’t matter as much. It is also harder for a stronger opponent to get in any very strong hits while on the ground.

So in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it could be said that the key to being successful is form and technique. When the fighting tournament starts both opponents are standing. At this stage the goal of each is to get the other to the ground. Usually both opponents end up on the ground but it is possible for just one person to end up on the ground with the other person just coming down to get him in a locked position.

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, once one or both of the opponents are on the ground the fight really gets interesting. Who will win and walk off with the prize? If both opponents are on the ground their main objective will be to get in a dominant position. The one in the dominant position first is most likely but not always the one to overpower his opponent and win the tournament.

There are a few famous Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu martial arts fighters. The most famous Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu martial arts fighter, and actually the creator of the martial art is the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu family. The Machado brothers and Fredson Paixao are also famous Brazilian-Jiu-Jitsu martial arts fighters. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a good form of defense and may decrease the need for gun use when protecting one’s self.
