Strikeforce’s Herschel Walker eyes Olympics, fighters’ union in MMA’s future
A former pro footballing great, one-time Olympic bobsledder and current
successful entrepreneur (in addition to his role as an MMA fighter), Strikeforce heavyweight Herschel Walker has just about seen it all.
But with his first taste of MMA behind him and a second helping on the
way in January, Walker has a few things he’d like to see happen in the
fast-growing sport.
First, Walker would like to see MMA in the Olympics. Second, he’d like
to see the sport’s participants develop a fighters’ union.
For resurgent UFC welterweight Nate Diaz, future not necessarily at 170 pounds
Struggling fighters looking to re-invent themselves often eye a move
down in weight as they seek a potential advantage against future foes.
But when 25-year-old scrapper Nate Diaz was looking to right the ship
following a 1-3 stint at 155 pounds, he did exactly the opposite.
Now competing in the welterweight class, Diaz is currently prepping for a
UFC 125 clash with Dong Hyun Kim, but he’s considering the future, as
well. And as far as Diaz is concerned, he can fight in two weight
classes – just bring on the big-name opponents.
UFC’s Nate Diaz has unfinished business at 155, but trainer sees future at 170
Nate Diaz established a strong foothold in the UFC welterweight division this past Saturday when he submitted Marcus Davis at UFC 118.
It was Diaz’s second victory at 170 pounds after serving most of his six-year career in the lightweight class.
And though Diaz wants to avenge his losses there, trainer and manager Cesar Gracie thinks he should stay at welterweight – at least for the time being.
Finally on cusp of title shot, UFC 118′s Gray Maynard not considering future just yet
While a victory at this weekend’s UFC 118 event would mean a long-awaited shot
at the lightweight title would be next for Gray Maynard, the Xtreme Couture product isn’t focused on his chance at the
belt.
Instead, Maynard says he’s only thinking about opponent Kenny Florian.
And while the mild-mannered wrestling ace admits his “one fight at a
time” approach to his career may be one reason Frankie Edgar leapfrogged
him for a shot at the belt, Maynard says he’s not changing.
