Tsukamoto’s Judo and Self Defence

This DVD part of the Bushido Series created by Hal Sharp is one that has crossed the gap of styles and is one of the best DVD’s I personally have ever seen on self defence.

You will not only see old school Judo by Tsukamoto but he will teach you practical defences against a knife, punching, strikes, grabs (waist and lapel) , and chokes.

Tsukamoto created his own system of self defence based on practical techniques and much has been simply lost over the years or changed from the way he meant it to be taught but now you can learn directly from the master himself.

As a bonus Sharp has included Hosogawa’s “Taiho Jutsu” self defence techniques that he developed for the Tokyo Police Department including defences against the Yakuzar’s sword, pistol take away’s staff defences and much much more.

Verbal Judo: Master Negotiations and Become a Black-belt

Verbal Judo: Master Negotiations and Become a Black-belt

Article by Danny Welsh

Verbal judo black-belt? Yeah, I mean these tactics to master negotiations are exactly that. Use these words, ideas, posture, attitudes, and techniques and you can accomplish anything in this world using negotiation. Money follows VALUE, and in negotiations the whole secret is to create value if you want to master negotiations.

Verbal Judo and How to Master Negotiations

1. You can’t learn negotiation tactics from a book. Find someone who is good, observe them and model what they do, how they talk, what they say (and don’t say). Ask them questions.

2. Use the power of silence. People will rush to fill it. Let THEM feel the unease of silence.

3. Knowing when to go on the attack (“offensive”) is easy– always.

4. Learning how to feign retreat on an issue or point (only to attack a different way) is essential to verbal judo success.

5. Always be more prepared than the guy sitting across from you.

6. Watch “Two for the Money”, “Thank you for Smoking”, “Thirteen Days” (Costner), “Thomas Crown Affair” (Brosnan), “The Devil’s Advocate” (Pacino), “The Negotiator”, and believe it or not “Pretty Woman”. While there’s some questionable morality in some of these movies, there are nuggets of negotiation wisdom in each that if applied can make you millions– without compromising your morals.

7. Learn how to argue instead of negotiate when appropriate

8. One who would master negotiations must understand that a raised voice commands respect only when it is genuine

9. The most powerful word you’ll ever need to counter an offer you don’t like: “WHAAAT?!?” A real verbal judo black-belt uses tone of voice as much or more than words to communicate.

10. Remember- you don’t get what you deserve, you get what you can negotiate. Using these negotiation tactics can help us get what we know we deserve. All of it.

11. Remember “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”. Always ask.

12. Ask questions. Ask questions. Ask questions. Questions are the blows of verbal judo. Ask, ask, ask. Just don’t ask me why!

13. Practice negotiation as much as possible. At the hotel. In line at the coffee shop. On the airline ticket counter. On the golf course. In the farmer’s market. With your spouse. In front of the judge. With your kids, etc

14. Remember, the buyer is in control (Unless you are the seller). Who is in control? You are. Have that attitude. Feel it in your gut: “I am in control”.

15. Read Robert Cialdini’s “Influence: Science and Practice”– it will blow your mind.

Skills Or Power: What Is Better For Judo Techniques?

Skills Or Power: What Is Better For Judo Techniques?

In the past the open weight division was almost always included in every competition. As a matter of fact when judo first started back in 1882 in Japan there was not even a discussion about weight divisions: everybody fought against everybody with no weight distinction. The main focus was always put on the judo techniques and how to perform them at its best.

There were many small masters, that were so outstanding performers, that no heavy weight could even think to defeat them. They were so used to perform their judo techniques with no flaw in it, that they really knew when to attack, how to attack and when to take advantage of the movement of the opponent. They literally trained to become unbeatable in whatever they did, focusing on specific trainings aimed to defeat the big and heavy ones.

Of course speed was one of their best allies and they really knew how to take advantage of it, but at the same time they also knew, that in order to defeat their powerful opponents they had to move all the time and had to make them move also, otherwise they would not have had any chance to throw them. Any static situation was the equivalent of death for them.

]]>

Another way to always improve their skills, was to train as much as they could with all kinds of different people, in order to get used to improvisation. They also paid a lot of attention to specific drills, that they continuously performed so that they were prepared and could naturally switch into a “big and heavy” mode or a “small and speedy” one, always based on who they had to face.

On the ground work they applied the same principles as in the standing judo techniques: they used speed as their best ally, made sure to always move around and frequently changed from one action to the other in order to confuse the opponent. They made wide use of armlocks and chokes. They made sure not to ever created static situations which meant instant death to them.

In the past the debate on who is going to win: the big and heavy or the small and light? was not even open. The focus was on skills and judo techniques and on how to apply them in the best way in order to always win.

Athletes however can even do something more, independently if they are small and light or big and heavy. They can both learn some more on how to improve their performance by mastering their nutrition besides their opponents. Judo Techniques: Fat Vs. Muscles

Judo Techniques: Fat Vs. Muscles

Whenever you train and perform your judo techniques it is quite obvious that it is better to have muscles rather than having your body mainly made of fat. There is no doubt and no discussion on it even when it comes to other sports: the perfect athlete is the one with all muscles and no fat.

However in judo the debate is always open as the first thing you learn to deal with before entering a competition is to cope with the scale. It is normal for almost all judokas to be obsessed by weight and to frequently step on a scale in order to always control that arrow and to make sure it does not go beyond that weight, which is the upper level of the weight division the judoka enters.

The young people while learning and improving their judo techniques have a hard time to understand the weight mechanisms and how they are related to what they eat. It is typical for teenagers to love all the foods that are exactly the opposite of what should be the right nutrition for a judoka in order to perform at its best. Besides the wrong eating habits they have, they are constantly stressed by the weight factor within judo as they always have to step on that scale!

]]>

When they are around 14, 15 or 16 of course they are still growing, which means to increase in size and also in weight. But in the judo competitions they are so used to their weight division, that they often refuse to enter the following one and often starve themselves to death to absolutely stay in that weight division. They think, that their skills will only work there and that if they move up they will find some monster with seven heads, that will beat them.

It is very difficult to make them understand, that because they are growing it is normal to increase in weight, but what they should learn is to increase their muscles instead of their fat: it is better to have 100kg of muscles rather than having 66kg of fat. In other words it is not a matter of weight, but a matter of proportions between muscles and fat.

Most of them think, that it is important just to make weight, without considering how their deprivation might influence their performance at the competition and how much extra stress they are accumulating. Their judo techniques will of course be negatively affected.

Shaping the body by following the right nutrition is really what to do in order to always be at peak performance. If you want to learn more on it visit judo techniques

2004 Judo Olympian Dr. Rhadi Ferguson and Navy SEALs Deliver Mental Toughness Training To College Athletes

2004 Judo Olympian Dr. Rhadi Ferguson and Navy SEALs Deliver Mental Toughness Training To College Athletes

Dr. Rhadi Ferguson – 2004 Olympian

Boca Raton, FL and Coronado, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2011

As part of the Navy’s effort to attract top minority talent, all 13 members of the CIAA—the nation’s oldest black athletic conference, established in 1912—have agreed to participate in the “Mental Toughness, Never Quit” campaign.

The training will occur during on-campus “Mental Toughness” seminars this month and in March at each school, as well as follow-up “Mental Toughness” conditioning and team-building events at the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Virginia Beach, Va. The base events will take place during spring football camp, a time in which the teams assess their talent and provide conditioning for the upcoming fall season.

The SEALs will provide players with a unique look into how mental preparedness is essential to winning.

One of the key facilitators of the program is 2004 Olympian and undefeated Strikeforce Mixed Martial Arts Fighter, and World Class Strength and Conditioning Coach, Rhadi Ferguson.

Dr. Ferguson has a compelling story and intriguing background which brings and interesting element to the Mental Toughness training seminar series. As a graduate from a Historically Black College (Howard University) and an exemplar in academia and sport, Dr. Rhadi Ferguson exemplifies what mental toughness is all about.

One of Dr. Ferguson’s Olympic Teammates is CIAA track and field coach and living legend, George Williams. When asked about the program Mr. Williams said, “I am excited that the Navy SEALs and the athletic directors of the CIAA have joined this mutually beneficial effort to share mental-toughness skills with the members of the CIAA,” George Williams, athletic director at St. Augustine’s College, a CIAA school, said. “From my 38 years of experience in the CIAA, and as the 2004 Head U.S. Olympic Track Coach, mental toughness is always key in developing success in athletics and life.”

And Dr. Ferguson couldn’t agree more. “As an Olympian, I recognize the need to push through tangible and intangible obstacles which life presents and which seem impossible to overcome. It is my desire and goal to provide a harmonious perspective to the student athletes as a graduate from a HBCU which will allow the message of Mental Toughness which the Navy Seals and I are delivering to have an even greater effect on the lives of the student athletes in the CIAA.”

The goal of the program—which includes goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk and emotional regulation skills—is to provide valuable training to athletes while exposing them to potential career opportunities within the SEAL Teams.

“We need a strong force of mentally tough, culturally-diverse SEALs,” Cmdr. Brodes Hartley of the Navy SEALs said. “We need the broad spectrum of thought and perspective, and the cultural insights that come from that diversity, to keep us on the cutting edge as warriors.”
