If you’re a mixed martial arts fan, you’re probably sick of that headline. You’re sick of hearing how Lorenzo J. Fertitta and Frank J. Fertitta have purchased PrideFC from it’s former Dream Stage Entertainment owners and ousted former CEO Nobuyuki Sakakibara. You want to hear more about what is possible the biggest month in Mixed Martial Arts history, April 2007.

There are four shows worth mentioning in April, in addition to season 5 of “The Ultimate Fighter”. These shows are:

April 5, 2007 – Ultimate Fight Night 9

This show features a bout between Joe Stevenson and Melvin Guillard. These two 155 pound fighters are at the cusp of becoming superstars in the UFC lightweight division. A win in this bout, then perhaps one more and one of these guys might be ready for a title shot. There is also another interesting match on this card, featuring the return of Kenny Florian after his beat down, courtesy of UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk. Kenny Florian is facing Dokonjonosuke Mishima.

April 7, 2007 – UFC 69: Shootout

Everybody is waiting to see what Georges St Pierre has in store for Matt “The Terror” Serra. St Pierre completely dominated Matt Hughes in his last outing, earning him the UFC welterweight belt. Serra on the other hand, barely squeaked by Chris Lytle to get the season 4 “Ultimate Fighter” title at 170. This could be an interesting match, but most expect another St Pierre blow out.

The most interesting match of UFC 69 will put Diego Sanchez’ undefeated record on the line against super-wrestler Josh Koscheck. These guys have met before, but Josh was a pure wrestler at that point, he’s had a couple of years of MMA experience now, let’s see who’s better now. Other big names on that card include Mike Swick, Kendall Grove, Heath Herring, Brad Imes and expect a great match between Josh “I never quit” Haynes and Luke Cummo.

April 8, 2007 – Pride 34 Kamikaze

This event isn’t nearly as interesting as it could be. The main thing that does make it interesting is the 10th anniversary and resignation of Sakakibara, all in the same show. Expect and emotional show with a lot of “Pride Past” clips. If you’re not a Pride fan, you soon will be, watching this show would be excellent research into what the Pride fighters bring to the table. Unfortunately it’s being shown live at 3:00am my time, bring on the coffee! The feature bout will be Sokoudjou vs Arona. Sokoudjou KO’s little Nog in his last outing and Arona is a perennial contender. Perhaps he has the most to win by the UFC owners purchasing pride. His solid ground game could be trouble for a lot of the UFC’s current 205 pound division.

Pride is also featuring a freak show match between Butterbean and Zulu, personally, I’m not interested.

April 21, 2007 UFC 70: Nations Collide

Finally, the show which will determine the future of the UFC heavyweight division. Mirko Cro Cop vs Gabriel Gonzaga will determine who meets Randy Couture for the title. Look for Cro Cop to dominate this one, but as always in MMA, never count any fighter out of any fight. There are a number of other interesting names on this card. Look for Michael Bisping “Ultimate Fighter” season 4 winner facing Elvis Sinosic in a match, seemingly designed to set up Bisping for a future title shot. Andrei Arlovski will face Fabricio Werdum which could end up being the fight of the night. Cheick Kongo will try to redeem himself after a decision loss when he faces Assuerio Silva. Let’s hope Cheick comes out swinging.

That’s it, a great month of great fights, and I barely even mentioned the big UFC – Pride purchase. For those of you sick of the UFC – Pride headlines, you’d better get used to it, it’s here to stay and will remain the big story in MMA for months.

In 1851, Florida Governor Thomas Brown approved a bill to provide assistance to higher education. Two years later, Gilbert Kingsbury took advantage of that legislation and instituted the East Florida Seminary. The effort was closed during the American Civil War, but EFS would later become what we now know as the University of Florida.

When the Civil War ended, James Henry Roper offered his land to house the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, where the University of Florida stands to this day. The university has come a long way since then, having become one of the most respected educational institutions in the world.

The University also has one of the best athletic programs in the nation. The Florida Gators represent the university in Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and has been a leader in the SEC for the past twenty years. Overall, they have seventeen teams, seven for men and ten for women. All the teams have top-notch facilities, including football, baseball, basketball, and softball. No wonder you can find Florida Gators merchandise just abut anywhere you look.

The Gators have a strong football team, holding the record for the most wins in the 1990s. Since the formation of the team in 1906, the Gators have appeared in thirty-four bowl games. They have also contributed quite a few All-American, and three Gators have received the Heisman Trophy. The team has a total of seven Southeastern Conference championships, and have numerous players who have gone on to the National Football League.

There was little success in the men’s basketball team up until the early 90s, when Lon Kruger took over the coaching of the team in 1993, leading the Gators to the National Invitation Tournament of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Kruger left after a losing record and was replaced by Billy Donovan. When Donovan took over the program, things were looking brighter. After his third season, the Gator’s men basketball has reached the NCAA tournament eight years in a row, from 2001 to 2008.

The Florida baseball team had its best season ever in 2005, making an appearance in the College World Series. However, the following years were tough; head coach Pat McMahon was fired and 2007 and Kevin O’Sullivan took over.

The Gator softball team is also doing well. They recently reached the College World Series in May 2008.Aside from that, they also have the strongest Volleyball team. The Florida Gators, under the leadership of May Wise, has garnered several achievements including seventeen consecutive SEC division banners for the regular season and fourteen titles for SEC tournament.

Almost all Florida sports have excelled in many ways. They have produced some of the great women tennis players and have also won team titles in golf four times.

The athletic program of the University of Florida is just one of the indications of its growth since its establishment in 1853. Some of the teams in different sports had tough years; however, they have also contributed some glorious years for the institution. The university is the Alma Mater of many successful professional athletes in the major leagues. That alone is a strong sense of pride for the university.

Brendan Gaughan, the famed truck racer from Nevada, will undertake Dover’s ‘Monster Mile’ this weekend with an extra blast of confidence as he sports a special Georgetown University paint scheme on his No. 77 Chevrolet Silverado.

“There aren’t many race car drivers period that have college degrees especially from colleges that are the caliber of a Georgetown University,” Gaughan said. “When I get to run that paint scheme, it’s an honor and a privilege to me. I’m proud to be a Hoya.”

Gaughan will honor his school and its athletic programs on the race track this weekend at Dover. He also plans to donate all his winnings from the Dover race back to the University. “Being part of Georgetown and its athletic program is something that I am so proud of, which is why I want to represent them on my race truck,” he said. “Coach (John) Thompson was so much more than a coach or a teacher – he was a friend, a hero, a mentor. I want to make him and the entire athletic department proud with our truck and our run at Dover. I can’t think of a better way to give back to a place that meant so much to me.”

Gaughan attended Georgetown University and graduated in 1997 with a degree in business management. While at Georgetown, he participated in two collegiate sports. He earned the All-Conference honors in the NCAA Division IAA football. He also earned a spot on the Hoyas basketball team, playing for legendary coach Thompson. The team Gaughan played on recorded two Big East regular season championships and competed in two Sweet 16s and one Elite Eight in post-season NCAA tournament plays.

“Dover is the most amazing race track,” Gaughan said. “It’s the only race track where my spotter has had to remind me to breathe. It’s the only place you feel a sensation of speed. It’s Bristol on steroids. It’s a great race track. It’s fast. It’s aggressive. It is a monster. It’s fun as hell to race. I know that I blew a chance to win in Dover at 2003, and I’d like to get that back this time,” he noted.

With the extra support from Chevrolet and the extra research and development that crew chief Bryan Berry has put into each race, Gaughan feels confident that his South Point Racing team will make him a contender for the Dover win. With the Georgetown logos prominently featured on his race truck, Gaughan also hopes that some of the positive energy from the recent run of the Hoyas basketball team will flow his way.

His race truck will not only captivate enthusiasts because of its prominent Chevrolet pickup handle relocation kit. The Georgetown basketball logo and the team’s mascot, Jack the Bulldog, could do the trick. “Hopefully, we’ll go to Dover and make a run for Georgetown and the No. 77 fans out there just like my Hoyas basketball team did during March Madness,” Gaughan said.

The Big Ten Conference, which is the oldest athletic conference in the country, is widely respected and generally recognized as one of the nation’s leading conferences. What is it about the Big Ten that sets it apart from most other conferences? Well, there are undoubtedly many contributing factors, but in this short article I will discuss a few key qualities of the member institutions that largely account for the stature of the Big Ten.

First of all, the quality of the faculty and students is first-rate. Many of the faculty at Big 10 universities are leaders in their field, having achieved national and international recognition for themselves and for their institutions. Faculty at Big 10 universities are not only held to high standards for teaching, they also are expected to conduct leading edge research in their respective fields, and their writing appears regularly in books and in the most highly-respected and most exclusive scholarly journals.

Of course, some Big Ten universities are more selective in their student admission requirements than others, but on a continuum from least selective to most selective institutions nationwide, Big Ten schools are definitely toward the most selective end. Given the combination of world-class faculty and high-quality students, it is not surprising that Big 10 universities feature some of the top-rated academic programs in the country. Of course, not every program at every Big Ten university is top notch. Prospective students definitely need to research the particular programs they are interested in and identify the institutions with the best programs. Graduating from one of the top-ranked programs in the country is certain to increase a student’s chances of being hired quickly. In fact, some employers actively seek graduates of certain programs at certain Big 10 institutions because they know that these students have received superior training.

Finally, the athletic successes of Big Ten Conference universities also contribute to the respect and recognition the conference has received. Big Ten schools have won their share of national championships in a variety of sports. Furthermore, the Big Ten is generally regarded as one of the power conferences in the two big revenue sports (football and basketball), with several Big Ten teams regularly appearing in the Top 25 rankings, BCS bowl games, and NCAA basketball tournaments.

Along with bringing recognition and respect to the conference, the athletic successes of Big 10 teams also provide a huge source of pride to students, alumni, faculty, staff, and fans of member institutions. The Big 10 boasts some of the most loyal and most committed fans in the country. Since the 1970s-for over 30 consecutive years-the Big 10 Conference has led the nation in college basketball attendance. While the Big 10 Conference ranked second last year in college football attendance, three Big 10 schools led the nation in attendance, each averaging well over 100,000 fans at each home football game. Clearly, those associated with Big 10 universities take great pride in their sports teams, just as they take great pride in their academics.

In today’s society, getting a college degree is more important than ever to your future financial success. However, if you want to give yourself a competitive edge in the job market, you need to get a degree from a reputable university. Because Big Ten Conference universities are prestigious and well-respected, earning a degree in a high-quality academic program at one of these universities will most likely make you more attractive to potential employers.
