Richmond, Virginia Self-Defense Academy Responds to Recent Richmond Events

Richmond, VA (PRWEB) September 21, 2006

Andrew Smith, owner of Revolution Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, will be hosting an eight week women’s self defense class in Richmond’s Short Pump area. The class will be held in the Revolution Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy located at 2540 Gayton Centre Drive, starting Friday, October 6 at 6:30 PM.

In the wake of recent events in the metro Richmond area, it is more important than ever for women to be prepared to defend themselves. Taking a self defense class geared toward women will allow them to gain self confidence by learning how to defend themselves against a larger attacker, even if the attacker has already taken the woman to the ground.

The women’s self defense classes will be taught using Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques. Andrew Smith is an accomplished Judo black belt and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses on ground fighting techniques, which is typically the position where women are the most vulnerable. Rebekah Carrow, who will also be teaching, has been studying martial arts since age 8, and is a black belt in Okinawan Kempo and a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Rebekah is certified in women-specific self-defense systems and is employed by the Safe Harbor Domestic Abuse Shelter.

The class will be open to women and girls that are ages 12 and up. The eight week class is only $ 99. There are group discounts available, if five or more women register together. Mothers and daughters coming to class together will also receive a discount.

Previous participant, Judy Fournier, says, “The class was extremely beneficial for any woman. The situational exercises gave ideas on how to escape a bad situation. I would highly recommend this class for all women who want to feel safer when alone.”

Karate Master Meitatsu Yagi Releases New Book: Importance of Spiritual Karate: Self-Defense for the Body and Soul

(PRWEB) July 4, 2008

Master Meitatsu Yagi is a much-honoured name in the karate world. He is the eldest son and successor to Grand Master Meitoku Yagi. He has been training and teaching for nearly sixty years. He is the chairman of the International Meibukan Gojyu-Ryu Karate-Do Association, which has its headquarters in Okinawa, Japan, the birthplace of karate. He has seen much over the years — the global growth of Karate-Do, the increasing acceptance of karate a self defense activity that builds not only the body, but also the heart, the soul and the mind.

Having traveled extensively teaching seminars, Meitatsu Yagi has witnessed many changes in how karate is perceived and taught as karate has developed and grown around the world. Not all of the changes have been positive — karate has its philosophical origins in the art of self-defense, yet there are those factions that teach karate as an aggressive, combative art.

Meitatsu Yagi takes issue with this and his new book Importance of Spiritual Karate goes some distance to remind the karate adherents that karate, at its core, is much more than competition and combat. It is, in fact, a way of living, a way of looking at life itself, that obliges its practitioners to live a respectful life, based on humility, modesty and courtesy.

The author’s views in Importance of Spiritual Karate are reflected through the pens of Ken Trebilcock and Steve Lyons, two respected Canadians who have devoted much of their adult life to the art and artistry of karate. They tell the story of Meitatsu Yagi’s life in the karate world with clear respect for his views and with a dignity befitting his honoured position within Traditional Karate-Do.

Importance of Spiritual Karate is very clearly a book aimed at an audience of karate adherents, particularly those who may hold an interest in karate’s history and its world-wide development. There is much to be learned in Meitatsu Yagi’s words of wisdom — and there is also genuine value in expanding our understanding of traditional martial arts and Okinawa Karate in particular as contained in Importance of Spiritual Karate.

Pittsburgh Muay Thai Classes for Fitness and Self-defense

Pittsburgh Muay Thai Classes for Fitness and Self-defense

There are countless fitness programs today that promise to help you shed off the pounds quickly in a natural way. There’s yoga (and its many variations), pilates, aerobics, dance workouts…the list goes on and on and there’s Pittsburgh Muay Thai. However, there are only few that will not only help you keep in top physical shape, but also help you relieve stress and make you more mentally alert. If you are looking for a fitness program that will effectively help you lose weight, tone your body, defend yourself, and learn an ancient sport all at the same time, you should start finding a gym and fitness center that teaches Thailand’s national sport – Muay Thai.

Muay Thai is a contact sport that originated in Thailand and is also commonly referred to as the Science or Art of Eight Limbs. This name was derived from the fact that unlike other styles of martial arts, Muay Thai makes use of eight points of contact: the fists, knees, elbows, and feet. The sport is comprised of entire body movements because it uses eight points of contact, with your hip rotating and moving in the direction of the kicks, punches, elbows and blocks you deliver. The sport is similar to certain styles of kickboxing, but at the same time has unique movements that have been incorporated into the practice as it evolved over the years.

Muay Thai for Self-defense

If you want to learn Muay Thai for self-defense, the first thing you should look into is finding a certified Pittsburgh Muay Thai instructor who’s had years of experiencing practicing and teaching the sport. To be able to teach the sport for self-defense, your instructor would have to be able to explain to you the six principles: blocking, redirection, avoidance, evasion, disruption, and anticipation. Under each self-defense principle are movements and techniques that will basically teach you to be alert and agile to avoid getting hit, gain physical advantage over your attacker, and be able to anticipate and counter the attacks.

Benefits of Muay Thai

Aside from being able to effectively defend yourself against attackers, Pittsburgh Muay Thai classes also help students develop agility, focus, and physical and mental strength. Another good thing about the sport is that the movements and techniques are generally easy to learn, so students will not have a hard time learning and using them in a short amount of time. Muay Thai also promotes cardiovascular health because it keeps the entire body moving and thus improving blood flow and increasing the oxygen content in the blood.

As you can see, there are many reasons why Muay Thai is now among the most popular forms of martial art, contact sport, and fitness program worldwide. Aside from the many benefits you’ll gain from learning it whether as a sport, martial art, or self-defense or fitness program, it is also a practice that can be easily learned and does not require expensive equipment. What’s important is you have the desire and discipline to learn it, and even more importantly, you have a highly qualified Pittsburgh Muay Thai instructor to teach you everything you need to know at a pace that you are comfortable with.
