The Benefits of Karate

The Benefits of Karate

Article by Ander Lilla

Karate is a martial art form that has been around for hundreds of years. The martial arts movies of the 1960′s and 1970′s have increased its popularity. Many people these days search for an art form that provides both physical and mental benefits. They turn to Karate because it offers several benefits, all of which we can carry into our everyday lives.

The earlier you can get your kids in Karate the better. They can be taught about discipline, hard work, and how to defend themselves at a young age. Some kids unfortunately may never learn those skills. Karate can also enhance your child’s self esteem. It’s an excellent confident booster as it eliminates the need for them to compare themselves to their peers. Instead Karate encourages kids to draw on their own strengths and strive to do their best. As we know, a confident child is able to face life’s challenges head on and self assured children are less likely to seek trouble.

There are many physical benefits to Karate. I think the main aspect of it is that you can defend yourself. How great would it be if you could defend yourself at the grocery store when that person right in front of you took the last Snickers bar! Well, maybe not for that but if someone was actually trying to physically harm you, you would be able to protect yourself. Karate, like other martial art forms is known to increase stamina so you feel energized and great all day. Say bye bye to that cup of Joe you use to purchase in the morning because you won’t need it. This is a natural high you get from working out. If you are looking to shed a couple of pounds and increase your flexibility then karate is for you. It helps aid in weight control for better overall fitness. Karate also improves your reflexes and coordination. This will really help when you are trying to dodge kernels of popcorn that your husband/wife is throwing at you after stealing the remote control. Or on a more serious note, if you’re running in the mountains, you can dodge falling rocks.

There are also many mental benefits to Karate. It aids in reducing your stress and gives you the ability to relax. I think we could all use some of that in our lives. Karate builds your motivation and provides you with an ‘I Can Do It’ attitude. That kind of motivation is helpful if we’re biking up a big hill. I know I tell myself, “You Can Do It.” It also improves your concentration for better work and study habits. Wow, I wish I would have been doing this during college! Karate helps you have more respect for yourself and those around you which is a really important factor. It also provides you with confidence in knowing you can defend yourself and your family. I think that would be a rewarding assurance for all of us to have. Karate can also provide you with a positive attitude towards life through self-discipline and self-confidence.
